Uncontrolled landfills an unpunished business in Mallorca. ¿Till when? |
![](http://www.fullblog.com.ar/blogs/pau/1272230401269389.jpg) I think we can all agree that the world would be a better place if we humans could be zero waste. No more trash, and everything used or decomposing in a healthy cycle.
When you purchase something, the cycle of disposal is yours with that ownership. Lindhqvist, a Swedish professor, defined "extended producer responsibility"(who pollutes pays) as the extension of the responsibility of producers for the environmental impacts of their products to the entire product life cycle, the entire ecosystem of packaging, creation, use, disposal, recycling, and all that... it's big- too big for most of us to comprehend. But there is something simple you can understand. You.
What can you do to affect any change here?
If you consumed it, it is your responsibility to dispose of it properly. Much like you wouldn't put your bodily waste all over the ground, you shouldn't put your trash their either. (I've borrowed the above paragraph from The Artist Farm Blog from The Artist Farm Blog)
The current thinking goes that if you've paid a fee then someone else should clean up/recycle after you; that it is the right to litter of anyone doing works at home
Nobody likes to pay for recycling properly but rules are very strict and for anyone doing works at home taking rid of debris results in a additional expense at least in Mallorca.
I echo the followng news of the newspaper El Mundo: "Only one third of construction and demolition debris reach treatment plants in Mallorca. The c&D debris has become an illegal business that moves tens of millions a year"
In Mallorca, the emergence of illegal landfills has soared in recent years. Today there are more than one hundred "macrovertederos" flooding the Mallorquian rural land.
The modus operandi is as follows: The builder pays the fee but the carrier brings the debris to an illegal landfill. Another way to act is that the constructor pulls debris into a rubbish tip. With the debris recycling builders, transporters and owners are making money.
Uncontrolled landfills has become an unpunished business in Mallorca. ¿Till when?
